I end Chapter 15, My Brother, A Dying Man, with this bittersweet commentary.
“Now when I look back from the vantage point of hindsight, I can see this entire story laid out before me with all of its twists and turns, surprises, detours and dead ends. Yet, if I had it to do all over again, I don’t think that I could have changed anything and, certainly, I could not have changed the outcome. We are all helpless in the grand scheme of things to change anyone’s destiny. We can only make fleeting attempts to alter the course of someone else’s life no matter how much we try to help them. Ultimately, I learned that there were limits to what I or anyone could have done to save my brother and with his death my efforts proved to be of only transient value to him, but still worth every moment of my time.”
